Description This course provides students with strategies and practice needed to be successful at writing essays in academic level.
Objectives - To equip students with knowledge on strategies essays of various types. - Enable the student to use the process of writing - To enable the correct use of written language
Course Outline
1Writing for an academic audience. Rhetorical and genre analysis: essays and journal articles.
2Thesis statements. Controlling ideas. Parts of an essay.
3Paragraph Structure: Topic sentence; explanation, evidence, and support; and conclusion.
4APA and MLA. Citing and referencing sources: avoiding plagiarism. Paraphrasing and quoting.
5The process of Academic Writing. Pre-writing: Brainstorming, choosing and narrowing the topic.
6Planning and outlining: Parallel Form Rule, Equivalent Value Rule. Review.
7Drafting and revising: higher order concerns and lower order concerns. Providing peer feedback.
8Midterm Exam
9Transitions. Logical order of ideas. Cohesiveness and coherency.
10Voice and style; grammatical concerns. Mechanics. Formatting according to APA / MLA
11Argumentative essays, compare and contrast essays, descriptive essays.
12Writing literature reviews. Reference lists and annotated bibliographies.
13Research / journal articles.
14Writing reports. Dissertations.

Learning Outcomes and Competences
1Students should be able to write clear, well-structured academic texts of some length, with a high degree of grammatical accuracy and in an appropriate style (essays, articles, dissertations, etc.)
2Students should be able to use in a appropriate way a range of argument types and demonstrate a command of both general and specialised vocabulary
3Students should be able to edit one's own and colleagues' texts, improving them stylistically and grammatical
